Carbon footprint of cows’ milk: a case study of peri-urban and urban dairy farms within Mekelle milk-shed, Ethiopia

In Ethiopia, there is an urge to enhance milk production where urban and peri-urban farms play important role. Therefore, the role of such system in Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions should be known. This study was conducted with objective estimating carbon footprint (CF) within Mekelle milkshed, Ethiopia. 50 42 dairy were selected randomly both primary secondary data collected. Lifecycle Assessment (LCA) approach employed quantify GHG using cradle to- farm gate approach. The mean per cattle unit (000 kg CO2-e y-1) 2.84 ± 1.23 3.19 1.99 for farms, respectively. share enteric fermentation 75.5% 73.6% Milk contributed 88.5% 90.8% economic value Overall, CF 2.2 CO2-e/kg 3.2 without allocation, 2.0 2.8 allocation. order reduce emission intensity from it adopt climate smart practices.
